Let’s Talk: Waiting Till Marriage

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my journey of being abstinent for almost five years and intentionally waiting until marriage for the past four. It’s important to clarify this distinction because I didn't initially choose celibacy with that goal in mind. However, when I fully surrendered to God, He began to transform my heart. I’ve had people tell me, “You’re stronger than I am,” which makes me question whether they truly understand or believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, because honestly, it’s not about me.

Early on, God revealed to me that waiting isn’t just about saying no to sex; it’s about saying yes to purity, which is necessary even within marriage. Purity involves honoring God with the temple He’s given me—my body, mind, eyes, and ears. What I focus on, what I pay attention to, and what I listen to all matter. It hasn’t been easy; God has had to address a lot of lust issues—yes, women deal with that too. But I can genuinely say that God has brought me this far.

So, whether you’re waiting, deciding to give God your complete yes, or struggling in this area, be encouraged. The same Holy Spirit who raised Christ from the dead is with you and can help you as you wait—not just for a husband or wife, but for God.

“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” — Romans 8:9-11

In addition, you’ll find below scriptures related to sin, sex, and sexual immorality. Read them through the lens of grace, understanding that if you’ve struggled with or fallen into these sins, God hasn’t counted you out. However, we mustn’t abuse the grace and freedom Christ has given us to continue living in sin. If you find yourself feeling convicted by these scriptures—especially if you’re engaging in behaviors they address—consider it a nudge from the Holy Spirit. Listen to that conviction, repent, and ask for His help in overcoming these challenges. Always remember to stay rooted in the Word.

Scriptures to Reflect On:

  • Romans 6:1-2

  • Romans 12:1

  • 1 Corinthians 5:9-13

  • 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

  • Galatians 5:16-25

  • Ephesians 5:3-11

  • Hebrews 13:4

Embrace the journey of purity with the understanding that the Holy Spirit is your guide, helping you live a life that honors God and reflects His love and grace.
